Properly Winterizing your Vehicle

A Matter of Security

The turbulent weather conditions of Quebec winters force people to put on their car’s four compliant winter tires, which must be in good condition. They must be able to properly drive in all possible conditions. Passenger vehicles, taxis and commercial vehicles equipped with studded tires are authorized to be installed from October 15th to May 1st inclusively.

Snow and ice falling on roads cause summer tires to lose elasticity, reducing their efficiency on the slippery conditions. The rubber used for winter tires provides superior traction and better grip on slippery roads.

Breaking the Law

Quebec is the only province where winter tires are mandatory on all passenger vehicles for a specified period of time. In addition, only winter tires with a pictogram of a mountain and a snowflake, with or without studded studs, are accepted by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec.

A car on Quebec roads without winter tires would not comply with the law and the driver would be penalized with the issuance of a ticket. It is important to pay particular attention to the condition of your tires- a worn tire will have a hardened tread and will be much less effective on ice and snow.
