Limiting Pothole Damage

Here are 4 tips to help you limit damages that may incur to your vehicle as a result.

Be Aware of the Risks

1. Check your Tire Pressure

Have your tire pressure checked as soon as spring arrives. When over-inflated, your tires may explode if subject to too much impact. On the other hand, if not inflated enough, your tires may get stuck between the pothole and the wheel which will in turn break the rubber.

2. Look Ahead

When driving, make sure to have a peripheral view of the road. Looking high and wide will allow you to observe the state of the road and react accordingly. It is also important to keep a reasonable distance from the vehicle in front of you- if they hit a pothole or manage to avoid one, you will have sufficient time to react.

3. Minimize Impacts

If you see a pothole that you simply cannot avoid, you should then:

  • Slow down as much as possible before impact;
  • Avoid sudden braking while driving on the pothole- sudden braking with a locked wheel amplifies the damage caused! ;
  • Hold the steering wheel firmly to keep control of your vehicle.

4. Stay Tuned

Slow down and pay special attention to large bodies of water on the streets. They can in fact be disguising large holes. If your car gets impacted despite your best efforts and you notice any anomalies in your driving, ask your mechanic for an inspection ASAP.

Note that the extent of the damage depends on the speed of the vehicle as well as the size and depth of the hole you encounter.

Important to know

Damage caused by potholes will be covered by your insurance only if you have chosen the following optional coverage: “Damage to insured vehicles – Risk of collision or rollover”. It also covers collisions with another vehicle, person, animal or object and covers the costs when your car overturns, depending on your deductible.

In addition, by law, cities and municipalities cannot be held liable for damage caused by potholes to the suspension or tires of your vehicle.

Finally, for your protection and that of other motorists, you can contact the city or town in question to inform them of any pothole you may have encountered on your route. It is then required to make the necessary repairs and maintenance from the time it receives the notice.
