Today’s climate: is your home well protected?

Here are some steps that will help protect your home (and avoid unpleasant surprises when filing a claim):
  1. Check your sump pump when a major storm is forecast. Also connect it to a backup battery that can power it for about ten hours (or more, depending on the model) in case of a power outage.
  2. When strong winds are expected, secure or bring inside anything on your property that could be blown away: garbage and recycling bins, temporary covers, outdoor decorations, snow shovels or brooms, etc. Also protect your windows by installing shutters.
  3. To minimize risks and create a firebreak, keep shrubs at least 1.5 meters away from your home. Also consider using fencing made of fire resistant materials instead of wood. Regular pruning of surrounding trees and shrubs will reduce the risk of damage during strong winds, such as broken power lines or shattered windows.
  4. Purchase flood barriers (also called anti flood gates). If water levels rise, place them in front of doors, garage doors, and other openings. Two types exist: metal and inflatable. Also have sandbags on hand to build a barrier around your home to protect it from flooding or slow the progression of water. Water related coverage can vary greatly from one insurance policy to another, making prevention essential.
  5. Waterproof your foundations. Repeated water infiltration can lead to coverage exclusions or limitations over time. Preventing these issues protects both your home and your insurance record.
  6. Get a generator. Learn how to use it and test it every month. Store enough fuel to run it for a few days. A gasoline generator provides 8 to 12 hours of power (depending on load), while a dual fuel model (gas + propane) can provide around 14 hours.

Even with good precautions, unexpected events can still occur. With the evolving climate in Québec, reviewing your home insurance helps ensure it still meets your current needs.
