Smoke Detector: A 24/7 Protector

Where Should a Smoke Detector Be Installed?

At least one smoke detector should be installed on each floor, including the basement. It should be placed in each bedroom or in the hallway leading to the bedroom, no more than five meters from the door of the bedroom. In fact, nothing on a floor should be more than 15 meters away from a detector placed on the same floor.

Should the Same Type of Detector Be Used Everywhere?

More sensitive to vapors and smoke, the ionization detector is recommended for bedrooms and hallways. On the other hand, because it is less sensitive to both, the photoelectric detector is suggested near the kitchen and bathroom. Finally, if someone in the house is hearing impaired, a combined sound and strobe light detector is recommended.

Are There Any Standards for Smoke Detectors?

Every smoke detector sold and installed in the country must bear the ULC (Underwriters Laboratories of Canada) label. This certification confirms that it has been manufactured and tested in compliance with Canadian regulations. Furthermore, for insurance purposes, a premium discount is often given if the detector is connected to a fire station.

What Kind of Batteries Are Recommended?

Even if the smoke detector is connected to the house’s electrical system, it should have a battery to function in case of a power outage. More commonly, battery-operated detectors require a 10-volt battery, ideally lithium (which lasts longer).

How Often Should You Replace the Batteries?

Take advantage of the two time changes each year to install new batteries. The next one will occur overnight from March 8 to 9.
